Do Your Gums Take Damage if You Go Out In the Sun?
Posted on 11/9/2020 by Dr. Joshi
Going out into the sun is necessary for your oral health if done with the right amount of precautions. While there are some dangers to your gums from exposure to the sun, research has shown that your gums can actually benefit from the proper amount of sun. It is important to remember the same precautions of sunblock and staying hydrated should be followed.
The biggest concern with staying out in the sun for an extended amount of time is the increased possibility you become dehydrated. Dehydration is your body can have detrimental effects on your organs. Your mouth is no exception. When your body becomes dehydrated, there is less saliva available and produced in your mouth. Saliva is a natural fighter against bacteria and acid left behind from snacks, foods, and drinks. Without this saliva constantly cleaning and encircling your teeth, your gums could be more susceptible to infection and inflammation. If you plan to be in the sun for an extended period of time, be sure to bring sufficient water with you to help you stay hydrated.
Increased Vitamin D
A benefit of the sun, however, is the increased levels of Vitamin D. Much of the Vitamin D you have in your body is absorbed directly from the sun, the other minority is from specific foods you eat. Vitamin D allows your body to easily absorb calcium, which strengthens enamel, gums, and your oral health. Most importantly, Vitamin D reduces the risk of gingivitis and periodontal disease, or gum disease.
You should continue to take precautions when going out into the sun. The correct level of sunscreen and regular water intake will keep your body protected from the damaging effects of overexposure.
