If You Lose A Tooth, How Quickly Must It Be Replaced?
Posted on 5/25/2020 by Dr. Chapko
When you experience tooth loss, replacing your tooth isn't only about vanity. It's also about preventing a series of unfortunate events that can not only affect your appearance, but also your bite, your chewing pattern, and the condition of your neighboring teeth. Soon after you lose a tooth, the bone in the area where the tooth was located begins to deteriorate and shrink due to a lack of stimulation. In turn, your smile and the shape of your face begin to change, causing a sunken and prematurely aged appearance that often leads to a loss of self-esteem.
What If Wait Too Long to Replace a Missing Tooth?
Many times, we will recommend installing dental implants to replace any missing teeth. We've found this to be the most effective solution as long as there is enough healthy bone remaining in your jaw. On the other hand, if it's been too long since you lost your tooth, there may not be enough jawbone mass to effectively stabilize dental implants. In this case, however, an oral surgery procedure known as bone grafting can be performed to prepare your jawbone for implants.
Another challenge associated with prolonging replacement of a missing tooth is that adjacent teeth will begin to tilt and/or shift toward the empty space. This can make the shape and size of the space no longer able to accommodate a quality tooth replacement. In such a case, however, we can recommend a treatment solution based on these limitations.
When you lose a tooth, it's important to schedule a visit in our office as soon as possible so we can weigh your options for replacement with you and determine the best treatment(s). This will help increase your chances of restoring a natural-looking smile, along with boosting your self-confidence. Please, contact our office for more information.
